Garfinkel is a native of Bronx, New York. He was the son of a shoe-salesman while his mother worked as an accountant. He was a student at his school at the Bronx High School of Science but later graduated at Evander Childs High School. He went on to Queens College, graduating in 1977. In college He was a member of several folk groups and rock bands. He also attempted his hand at stand-up comedy on stage at Improv at the Improv in New York and the Comedy Store in Los Angeles.

Garfinkel began the career he was on in when he was an assistant copywriter in an agency for advertising that was small, James Neal Harvey. After just two weeks, he quit to join the agency for creatives, Levine Huntley Schmidt Plapler and Beaver and continued for eleven years. He went from the position of junior copywriter, to executive director in only several decades, Lee wrote or supervised successful campaigns for Subaru, Citizen Watches, Matchbox cars, Ferrarelle Mineral Water and Genesee Beer.

In addition to winning Cannes Lions for Subaru, Pepsi, Mercedes, Beneficial and Heineken, his industry honors also include One Show, ANDY and Clio awards. Garfinkel has served as President of the One Club (1991–1993); he chaired the ANDY Awards in 1998 and in 2002 he was the U.S. Juror at the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.
