She was the daughter of Jeff as well as Avril (nee James) Wood. Wood was raised and lives in the village that is close by, Penygraig. She attended Tonypandy Comprehensive school (now Tonypandy Community College) as well as The University of Glamorgan (now the University of South Wales).

She was unsuccessful in the elections of 1997 and 2001 in the House of Parliaments of the United Kingdom as a candidate for the Rhondda constituency.
