Leah Marie O’Brien Amico (born September 9th 1974) is the mother of Frederick G. O’Brien and Denise M. Lynch, is an American former All-American in collegiate sports left-handed softball player born in Chino, California. O’Brien Amico is famous for her time with the Arizona Wildcats (1993-1997, winning three National Championships) and earning gold medals at the 1996 2000, 1996 as well as the 2004 Olympics. She is an USA Softball Hall of Fame Honoree.
For her third consecutive participation during the WCWS finals, O’Brien Amico and the Wildcats played again against Bruins from the UCLA Bruins but were defeated 4-2 on the 29th of May 1995. O’Brien Amico scored 2/3 and an RBI and was once again named All-Tournament. This title later was cancelled by the NCAA due to violations of rules.
In 2002, O’Brien-Amico was inducted into the University of Arizona Hall of Fame. She now lives in California with her husband Tommy and three children. She currently works in the ministry and occasionally offers color commentary for ESPN.
On the “Aiming For Athens” Tour, O’Brien-Amico hit .386 with 43 RBIs, 5 home runs and 9 doubles. Facing the Stanford Cardinal on February 20, 2004, O’Brien had a tour-high 3 RBIs on a home run to eventually win 9–0. In the Olympics, O ’Brien-Amico had a tournament-best 2 RBIs off Melanie Roche of Australia on August 15; the US eventually won 10-0 run-ruling the Australians. She would equal her performance vs. Greece on August 19.
In their return for the defense of their championship at WCWS O’Brien Amico hit .750 (9/12 with five RBIs, a homer as well as the two doubles) to make the record-setting tournament for the batting average. The Wildcats managed to retain their title by beating those of the Cal State Northridge Matadors on May 30 in 1994. O’Brien-Amico had a flawless performance on the mound (3/3) scoring two hits on pitching duo Jennifer Richardson and Amy Windmiller to earn the All-Tournament honors.

Born from Garden Grove, California, O’Brien-Amico graduated from Don Lugo High School in close by Chino in 1992. She later was a student at Chino, California. She then went on to the University of Arizona. As a member of the Arizona Wildcats softball team, she was selected as the first Team All-Pac-10 for her freshman performance. In 1993, at the Women’s College World Series, the Wildcats were up against their rival UCLA in the final game and, as the only hitting allowed by the team, She scored the winning run against Lisa Fernandez. This was Arizona’s second championship.
Based on the combined stats of previous seasons, O’Brien-Amico compiled the WCWS career total of .563 (31/55) including 19 RBIs and two home runs. She also had seven walks and four doubles with just one strikeout with a slugging rate of .745 percentage. She also scored safely in 17 out of 18 games, but was not beaten one time in the game against Melanie Roche and the Oklahoma State Cowgirls on May 30 1993. In the following game of the doubleheader together with ULL Ragin’ Cajuns ULL Ragin’ Cajuns, O’Brien-Amico went on a 15-game streak of hits which culminated with her winning her championship in 1997.
At the 2000 Sydney Olympics she hit under .250 for the tournament. O’Brien- Amico nabbed hits in games with Italy, Japan, China and Australia running September 23–25, 2000. She drove in her only RBIs in a 6-0 win over Italy and in the gold medal game was shut out by Japan, though Team USA won 2-1 on September 26.
