Lea Ann Parsley (born June 12th on the 12th of June, 1948) was a former American Skeleton racer from Granville, Ohio. The first female athlete in skeleton to be awarded an Olympic world cup medal in the United States and earned a silver medal in the women’s skeleton race that was the first to be achieved in Olympic history, at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Winter Games. She was also among the eight athletes selected to carry the World Trade Center flag into the opening Ceremony at the 2002 Winter Olympics.
Parsley was a dual sport scholar player on the campus of Marshall University competing in basketball as well as track and field. When she was a player in basketball,, she was named to the second team of All-Southern Conference. She also was the top player in the country for free throw percentage in her senior year, and is one of just 14 female athletes in school history to record over 1,000 points. Additionally, she also was named All-Southern Conference in high jump and javelin , and also held the school record for the javelin. For her work both on the field and off the field she was twice named the Marshall University Female Athlete of the Year. She was also admitted into the Marshall University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002.
In 1998, she was awarded an entry on the U.S. National Skeleton Team and competed for six seasons on the World Cup circuit. In 1999, her second-place finish with a second place finish in Norway was the first women’s world cup gold medal for the United States Bobsled and Skeleton Federation and she won seven world cup gold medals with numerous top six results. She finished fourth in the 2000 Goodwill Games, was the 2004 US National Champion and the silver medalist in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympic Games.

Parsley started her career as a firefighter volunteer in 1985. She earned top honors as a graduate at her school, the Ohio Fire Academy as a professional firefighter cadet, in 1995. She was awarded as the State of Ohio Firefighter of the Year in 1999 because of her role helping to save the mother and daughter in an incident involving a house fire. As an structural firefighter, she was a part of the Licking County, Ohio region as an officer of the Specialized Rescue Team, Hazardous Materials Response Team and the Licking Honor Guard in the county. Her current position is part of the Ohio Interagency Wild Fire Crew.
While at Marshall University Parsley earned a bachelor of science degree in adult health education (1990) and later , another bachelor’s degree from The University of Virginia (1992) in nursing. In 1994, she earned the master’s diploma in nursing through The Ohio State University and completed her doctorate in community nursing in 2003.
Her career ended as she attempted to qualify for the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin. She and several other teammates were struck by a runaway bobsled during a training session in Calgary Canada on October 19, 2005. The bobsled, which failed to brake after crossing the finish line, ejected out the end of the track and struck Parsley and teammate Noelle Pikus-Pace. Pikus-Pace, who was the reigning overall world cup leader at the time, suffered a compound fracture of her right leg that took her out of the running for a 2006 Olympic bid as well. Parsley suffered soft-tissue injuries to her right leg that severely hampered her ability to compete in the US team trials less than 72 hours after the accident. She stayed with the team however as an assistant coach and was part of the 2006 US Olympic Skeleton Team coaching staff.
