Laurie Blakeman (born May 23 in 1958) is an Canadian politician who was a member of the Edmonton-Centre electoral district within the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. She is an active member of the Alberta Liberal Party, and was first elected in 1997 election.
In 2007 Blakeman introduced his Healthy Futures Act, which would have mandated major funding and policy decisions for major decisions to go through “health impact assessments”, which would analyze the impact of these decisions on Albertans’ health via environmental and social effects. Blakeman’s Liberal colleagues backed the legislation, as did his fellow New Democrats (although NDP MLA Ray Martin expressed concern that the bill only required an assessment instead of action regarding the potential negative health effects) as well as a number of Progressive Conservatives. However, the bill was rejected by the overwhelming majority from Progressive Conservatives. Progressive Conservatives, many of who believed that the bill added nothing significant that did not already exist within the existing regulatory framework. It would also according to PC MLA Dave Rodney, “effectively bring[ing] the decision- making apparatus of the government and this Assembly to a grinding halt.”
The year 1999 was the time Blakeman introduced the Consumers Insurance Company Act which was an act that was drafted by a private party to create a brand new insurance company that was in line with the law stating that new insurance companies can only be established through the act of the legislature. The bill did however face some resistance of Blakeman’s Liberal colleagues, such as Linda Sloan, Hugh MacDonald as well as Gary Dickson, who expressed worry that the bill could represent a step towards privatizing healthcare. The bill was passed.

The year 1998 was the time she put up her bill known as the Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Amendment Act also a private member’s billthat would have broadened the province’s anti-discrimination laws to include sexual orientation as a factor that discrimination was not allowed (later in the same year, it was decided that the Supreme Court of Canada, in Vriend v. Alberta, ruled Alberta’s inability to include this provision as a reason for discrimination was in violation in the Charter of Rights and Freedoms) It also was not able to move through second reading.
Blakeman first ran for political office during the 1997 provincial election in which she was an Alberta Liberal campaigner in Edmonton-Centre to succeed the retiring Liberal MLA Michael Henry. The 2008 election would see an entirely brand new Progressive Conservative Opponent, in Bill Donahue. However, it was the same result was achieved in which Blakeman was able to keep her seat. In the 2015 election, Blakeman ran for three political parties: Liberal, Alberta Party and Greens. It was all in vain since she was sacked from her legislative seat during the election of 2015 which witnessed the NDP take over for the first time in history.
