He quit Mazda in April 2009, and was hired by Renault the 15th of May 2009. He joined Renault in the month of September 2009. took on the role of the Senior Vice-President of Renault Corporate Design to replace Patrick le Quement. He was a part of the design of the Renault Twizy and the four-generation Renault Clio and the 2013 Renault Captur.
In May 2006, he took over Moray Callum as the global head of design at Mazda. He was the designer behind his involvement in the Mazda Concepts Nagare (Los Angeles, 2006), Ryuga (Detroit 2007) as well as Hakaze (Geneva 2007).

His career began in the year 1990 as an interior designer for Design System srl in Turin, Italy, that worked on the interior of the Bugatti EB110 supercar.
In 1993, the designer relocated into Audi to work as an Interior Designer at the Design Center Ingolstadt in Germany which is where he first met J Mays. In 1996, he followed J Mays to SHR Perceptual Management in Newbury Park as a Senior Designer. Van den Acker joined Ford Motor Company in the same year, and J Mays had become vice-president of Design in 1998. In the late ’90s, he was appointed the chief designer of the Brand Imaging Group in Irvine, California. The group was responsible for the design of Ford concepts, such as the 427 designed by Joe Baker, Concept U and Ma In 2003, he was appointed chief designer of Ford Escape in the Dearborn Design Center, Michigan (USA). The year 2005 saw him was appointed the head designer for Strategic Design of Ford.
