After his election in 1997 into his seat in the House of Commons, Robertson faced controversy in May of 2001 when he ignored James Cran’s recommendation not to publicly declare his support of John Townend. Robertson was adamant about Townend’s controversial remarks concerning race on Newsnight on BBC. Newsnight declaring that Townend’s comments are “basically true” and “having more than enough people from various multi-racial groups makes the society extremely difficult to control, especially in some parts across the nation. It’s not an easy task to manage this kind of community.” Robertson was forced to apologize after being given an ultimatum to apologize or retract his comments and vow that he will not repeat the remarks, or to lose his position as the Conservative Whip of the Conservative party. Robertson was reported to have told his coworkers that he had received lots of support , and was later told that he was told by the Tewkesbury constituency chairperson that he shouldn’t have backtracked.

In May 2005, he advanced a private member’s bill to outlaw abortion, making it an imprisonable offence except where the mother’s life was at risk or where conception was due to rape.

Following the 2007 floods in Tewkesbury, Robertson spoke out against building on flood plains.

He was not given a ministerial position in the 2010 Parliament, but served as chair of the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee, and was re-elected unopposed for the same position in June 2015.
