Book is born in Hollywood, Florida in 1984 to parents Patricia “Pat” Book, an ex-chocolate retailer along with Ron Book, a Florida lobbyist and lawyer. She is the eldest of her three brothers. Book was sexually assaulted when she was a child, during the course of 6 years, by her caregiver, a nanny. She was diagnosed with anorexia as a consequence of the abuse. As of 2002, her nanny plead guilty to five felonies as well as was sentenced ten years in prison. She was later sentenced by 25 years. Book established a foundation, Lauren’s Kids, in 2007 to advocate for more severe punishments for sexual offenders.
Beginning in 2010 Book each year will lead “Walk in My Shoes” which is a 1500 mile (2,400 km) trek from Key West, Florida, to Tallahassee, Florida. She has published two books: Lauren’s Kingdom as well as It’s Okay to Tell the story of Hope and Recovery. She created a abuse prevention program for use at Florida kindergartens.
In 2015, she married Blair Byrnes. They are the parents of twins Kennedy Grace and Hudson Lee, born on February 16, 2017.
Book ran unopposed for the 32nd district seat in the Florida Senate in 2016. In the 2017 session, Book filed a bill that would remove Confederate Memorial Day, celebrated on April 26, 2017, from Florida’s list of 21 legal holidays. Her bill would also remove the birthday of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis as official state holidays. Book told CBS4 that “during a time when the country is completely divided, I think we look at celebrating our unique coming together instead of some of the things that kind of create hate and divisive environments.”
Book completed her studies at the University of Miami in 2008 with an undergraduate degree from the Department of Elementary Education. After her graduation, she taught for one year at Miami-Dade’s public schools.
