Lau Siu-lai is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on August 3, 1976 in Hong Kong. Lau Siu-lai (Chinese: Liu Xiao Li born on August 3, 1976) is a Hong Kong educator, academic as well as activist and politician. The sociology professor is professor at Hong Kong Polytechnic’s Hong Kong Community College and the creator of Democracy Groundwork and Age of Resistance. In 2016 Lau has been elected to the Legislative Council, representing the Kowloon West geographical constituency until she was removed in court on the 14th of July 2017 for her oath-taking style during the first session of the Legislative Council on 12 October 2016.

In the Legislative Council swearing-in on 12 October 2016, Lau initially read out an amended form of her oath she took to take office to protest. Lau was then asked to read it again and she read it extremely slow. Localist and pro- democratic candidates added additional words of protest in their swearings. LegCo chief Andrew Leung Kwan-yuen rebuffed the oath and issued Lau an email that reads: “The conduct of Ms Lau’s oath-taking, objectively assessed, has shown that she was not serious about the affirmation and had no intention to be bound by it.” Leung demanded Lau, Baggio Leung, Yau Wai-ching, as well as Edward Yiu, who had all protested during the swearing-in ceremony, to repeat their swearing-in.

Running under the banner of Democracy Groundwork, Lau was elected to the Legislative Council in the 2016 election, representing the geographical constituency of Kowloon West. During her election campaign, Lau stated that if elected her top priorities would be to “push back on ‘white elephant’ infrastructure projects, implement a universal pension scheme, legislate standard working hours, reform housing policy, and restart electoral reform.”

Lau’s educational career is under jeopardy due to her hawking-related activism. In mid-2016 the Hong Kong Polytechnic University launched a disciplinary hearing against her for “moonlighting” as she reportedly earned HK$10 selling snacks. Lau said that the university’s actions were politically motivated, stating that senior figures at the institute had told her that the president was under pressure from the university’s governing council to take action against her. Lau donated the $10 to her Democracy Groundwork and defended herself, stating that there was no conflict of interest, that hawking does not constitute formal employment, and that the ban on moonlighting applied only to full-time faculty (while she was a part-time lecturer at the time).

The government was able to challenge Leung’s decision in relation to Yau as well as Baggio Leung in a sweeping move in which they sought to debar two lawmakers who are democratically elected. Lau was not a protester, but in the same manner as Yau Wai-ching as well as Baggio Leung however, didn’t appear to be the target of the court’s order. Lau was officially sworn in on the 2nd of November, in 2016 by Andrew Leung, despite the protests of the pro-Beijing camp. The judge in charge of Yau and Leung’s cases ruled in favor of the government on November 15th 2016 disqualifying the two and disqualifying them from being a member of the legislative.
