Latasha Nashay Byears (born on 12 August 1973) is an ex- American professional basketball player for women. She was a player with the WNBA for the Sacramento Monarchs, the Los Angeles Sparks as well as the Washington Mystics, and for the Houston Comets. Byears was ranked eighth within the WNBA in field goal percentage (.514) and was one of the best 10 rebounders in the history of the league at the time of 2003.

In November 2006, Byears became part of in the Bulgarian group in CSKA Sofia.

Byears played for Leszno in Poland during the 2008-09 WNBA off-season.

After the 2000 season was over, Byears was traded to the Los Angeles Sparks, where she was an integral part of a championship victory for the team. After an incident on June 5, 2003 Sparks match, Byears and three men not connected to the Sparks were arrested for the alleged rape of an WNBA player. Byears was shaved by the Sparks within a couple of days of the incident. Then, four months after, the incident was revealed in light of Kobe Bryant’s rape allegations , and the fact that Byears was cut by the Los Angeles Lakers, who owned the Sparks at the time, backed Bryant throughout the controversy. Byears filed a lawsuit against the Lakers in a lawsuit, accusing that the team was guilty of double standards. Byears considered it unfair that she was not accused and never cut. Bryant’s lawsuit was settled however, he played and represented the team in the media. The criminal case was closed in the month of August 2005 due to lack of evidence, and Byears lawsuit against the Lakers was settled a few months later. Soon after the settlement, Byears returned to the WNBA after a gap of two years and signed as a player with the Mystics.

The family was born in Memphis, Tennessee, Byears was raised within Millington, Tennessee and went to high school in close by Arlington, Tennessee. In the following years, Byears played two years in Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, located in Miami, Oklahoma. Later, she moved into DePaul University in Chicago, where she scored 22.8 scores and 11.7 rebounds per game throughout the 1995-96 seasons which made her a first-team All-American.

Although they weren’t selected in the very first WNBA Draft, the Sacramento Monarchs hosted Byears in their practice camp before their first year in the 1997 season. Byears continued to play for the Monarchs for the following four seasons.

In 2007, Byears signed a free agent contract with the Houston Comets. She was briefly waived in 2008, before being re-signed. The Comets organization folded at the end of the 2008 season. Byears, as an unrestricted free agent, was not eligible for selection by another team in the resulting dispersal draft, and was not signed by another team prior to or during the 2009 season.
