Playing for the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers of the Class A Midwest League in 2012, the Timber Rattlers won the Midwest League championship. In 2013, the Brewers assigned Shackelford to the Arizona Fall League, where he was a member of the championship-winning Surprise Saguaros. After the 2013 season, the Brewers added Shackelford to their 40-man roster. He was designated for assignment on July 17, 2014, to make room for Irving Falu.

The Reds promoted Shackelford to the major leagues on June 27, 2017. He made his major league debut on June 29. In 2017 in 26 games for the Reds, he was 0-0 with a 4.70 ERA. The Reds released Shackelford on June 5, 2018.

In 2014, Shackelford pitched for the Brevard County Manatees of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League and the Huntsville Stars of the Class AA Southern League.
