Kazuhiro Koshi (Yue Hong, He Hong, Koshi Kazuhiro born on December 23rd 1964) is a Japanese Skeleton racer who has been racing since 1991. In the three Winter Olympics, he earned his best result of 8th at the men’s skeleton competition in Salt Lake City in 2002. He was the oldest participant of the Japanese team for the 2010 Winter Olympics and, because of this, was often referred to in reports by the media as “the hope of the middle class.”

Koshi was also a participant as a competitor in his own FIBT World Championships. He earned his highest finish of fourth place in the male Skeleton race at Nagano in 2003.

After skeleton was added the Olympic team at the 2002 Olympics the Olympic games in Salt Lake City, Utah for the first time in 54 years, Koshi qualified and placed eighth. He was a part of the Japanese team in 2006 for the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy where he placed 11th. In his quest to continue competing internationally in a time when many Olympic athletes are retiring from the sport, Koshi gained a measure of recognition in Japan and was often referred to by the media as “the hope of the middle-aged.”

The shot putter was originally a shot, Koshi’s initial attempt at sliding sports was unsuccessful as he was not able to be a part of the Japanese team of bobsleigh to participate in the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, France. Koshi later began the sport of skeleton, which is a relatively new one in Japan which made him the first Japanese athlete to be the winner of an event in the World Cup event in the sport at Nagano in 1999.

His highest overall men’s Skeleton World Cup performance was second two times (1997-8 2000-1, 19997-8).

Koshi qualified for his third Olympics, the 2010 Games in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and competed in the men’s skeleton event there, but finished in 20th place. He was the oldest member of Japan’s team at the Games. It was expected to be his last Olympics, though Koshi told reporters that he would continue to do skeleton, “for my health,” and suggested he might continue to compete in Japanese National Championships in the sport. He also is working to create a governing body for the sport in Japan.
