Kayah Biography

Kayah is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on November 5, 1967 in Warsaw, Masovian Voivodeship, Poland. Katarzyna Magdalena Szczot (born on 5 November 1967 in Warsaw) is professionally known as Kayah is a Polish artist and singer. In 1995 she released her first self- produced album Kamien and made herself one of the top Polish singers through the subsequent release of Zebra (1997) as well as Kayah i Bregovic (1999). In the mid-2000s, Kayah founded her own label, Kayax, which has signed several famous artists and released several critically well-reviewed albums. Kayah has sold over 1 million copies of her albums in the past and is still one of the most acclaimed artists in her peers in Polish world of music.

She released her debut album in 2000. debuted the album Jaka ja Kayah (Kayah like me) that featured pop music, jazz and techno-influenced tracks. She collaborated with Cesaria Evora to record one song called “Embarcacao”, sung in Crioulo in the new album that was recently renamed YakaYaKayah. The next album Stereotyp was released in August 2003 and included a huge success single “Testosteron”. The album was nominated for seven Fryderyk awards, and in the fall, Kayah began the Stereo Tour to promote the new album.

Kayah returned with her first studio album in six years in 2009. Skała (Rock), musically similar to her 1995 debut album, became a bestseller in Poland. 2010 saw the release of two collaboration albums: Kayah & Royal Quartet with the Royal String Quartet, consisting of some of her previous songs in string arrangements, and Panienki z temperamentem (Ladies with attitude), on which Kayah and Polish singer Renata Przemyk presented their own interpretations of works by Kabaret Starszych Panów.

In 2011, Kayah had a major commercial hit with her single “Za późno” (Too late) and took part in the TV show The Voice of Poland as a member of the judging panel. In 2013, she released an album Transoriental Orchestra which was an exploration of Jewish music. She also collaborated with young star Viki Gabor in 2019 with the song ‘Ramię W Ramię’ (Hand In Hand).

The year 1999 saw Kayah collaborated with Yugoslav composer Goran Bregovic to create among the top listened-to Polish albums evermade, called Kayah and Bregovic. The majority of the music was created by Bregovic for the group Bijelo Dugme (White Button) in which he had been involved in, as well as for film soundtracks that he was working on. They were both translations and influenced by the original lyrics. The two first singles on the album “Spij kochanie, spij” (Sleep my love rest) along with “Prawy do lewego” (From right to left) were huge success in Poland for several months, and the album was able to sell more than 700,000 copies. The same year, Kayah was honored with another Fryderyk in the category Vocalist of the Year.

In the beginning the career of Kayah, Kayah was a vocalist in church choirs as well as recording backing tracks in a number of bands, like Tilt. Her solo debut came by singing “Coreczko” (Little Daughter) in 1988, at Opole, Poland. 2005 saw the release of her first compilation, The Best & the Rest, a 2-disc set featuring all her greatest single hits as well as less popular tracks. It was promoted with two singles: “Prócz ciebie, nic” (Without you, nothing), recorded with Krzysztof Kiljański, and “Jutro rano” (Tomorrow morning). Kayah then shifted focus to production and released a number of successful, critically acclaimed albums on her own label Kayax. In 2006 she released her first live album, MTV Unplugged. The following years saw her working on various soundtrack melodies.
