On January 12, 2012 Garretson has been awarded Frank Capra’s Lifetime Achievement award of the DGA. The 26th time she was awarded the distinction, and it is given in each year’s DGA Awards event to those who are a Guild member who has at least 20 years of outstanding DGA credits and 15 or more years of “quality” Guild service. Garretson was an Associate National Board member and three-term Chair of the Council at the DGA and was a member of various committees of the guild. She is currently serving in the Directors Guild of America as an active member of the PAC Leadership Committee, the Frank Capra Award Committee, and the Western Directors Council Ethics Committee.

Garretson took a break of three years from directorial duties from the beginning of 2012 until 2014 to become the CEO/Executive Director of not-for- profit I Have A Dream Foundation which is located in Los Angeles. She was an instructor and volunteer for the foundation for several years, and was tasked to oversee the rebuilding and re-invigoration of the foundation. The work was completed by the close of 2014 and Garretson was able to return to her roots of creativity in the field of film and television.

He was also, in the years 2011-12, he discovered, created and served as the producer in charge for a television movie, Garage Sale Mystery, for the Hallmark Channel. The movie, which debuted during September 2013 broke almost all ratings records for the Hallmark Channel and the following month, Hallmark declared it was going to redesign its movie channel as The Hallmark Movies & Mysteries Channel which would feature the “wheel” of mystery movies that would be led by the brand new Garage Sale Mystery. 15 Garage Sale Mysteries were aired and four more were planned to premiere in August, 2019. but midway through the shooting of the 17th GSM the actor was arrested in connection with the admissions scandal at college and the series was pulled by Hallmark.
