She worked as the solicitor for Edinburgh and Musselburgh from 1991 to 1998. She was an officer in the legal field, and then the Head of Membership Legal Services with UNISON in London between 1998 and 2005. During this time, she fought employment law, which included Europe’s largest equal pay case. In it, she was awarded PS35m in back payment for female nurses and other medical personnel who were illegally underpaid in comparison to their male counterparts.
