Katsunari Takayama (Gao Shan Sheng Cheng Takayama Katsunari born on 12 May 1983) is a Japanese professional boxer who fought between 2000 and 2016. He has been the five-time world champion of minimum weight who held his WBC title from 2005 and his IBF title two times between 2013 and 2014. in addition to the WBO title two times between the years 2014 and 2017. In addition, he held his WBA interim title for a period of time from 2007. He resigned from professional boxing in April 2017 with the title of WBO world champion, in order to concentrate on his participation in 2020’s Olympics.
Takayama was awarded a new worldwide title shot the 14th of July in 2009. The shot took place for his WBA minimumweight title that was held by Roman Gonzalez. In the end, Takayama lost on all judges. He resigned as a boxer licensed by JBC to fight for WBO and IBF titles in the latter part of 2009. In the meantime, the JBC had not approved any bout for WBO and IBF titles, however, they allowed them to fight on conditional basis from February 28th the 28th of February, the 28th of February, 2011. He fought against Filipino Mateo Handig for the vacant IBF Pan Pacific mini flyweight title and the mandatory challenger status to the IBF mini flyweight title in La Trinidad, Benguet, Philippines on October 13, 2012. But he lost the fight via a split decision after being deducted a point in the fourth round for pushing. Two Filipino judges scored the fight 114–113 for Handig, while the other Thai judge scored it 115–112 for Takayama. The IBF ordered a rematch due to the inadequacy of the mandatory drug testing before and after the fight. After Handig’s injury, Takayama earned the right to challenge for the world title.
On the 7th of November, 2006 He won a fight against Carlos Melo for the WBA interim title. He was originally scheduled to fight Yutaka Niida to defend an official WBA crown in September. Due to a fracture of the costal cartilage Niida suffered during sparring, the fight was to be delayed until the 7th of April in 2007, and concluded with a split decision defeat. Following it, Niida’s former manager was not happy with the decision, saying that it was match fixing incident and that he was planning to bring civil lawsuit. But, he went to JBC JBC (Japan Boxing Commission) two days later to apologize for his insinuation, saying the only reason he was angry was to congratulate his boxer to the side. In addition, the majority of the money for this fight had not been paid. While Takayama and Nakade have announced they will move to any gym, the questions regarding fees for the transfer and match weren’t settled over the next few months.
