Katrin Borchert is one of the most popular and richest Canoeist who was born on November 4, 1969 in Haren, Lower Saxony, Germany. Borchert was born in 1969 in Waren an der Muritz, a town in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, East Germany. Borchert won the Junior World Championship in 1987 but was eclipsed by Birgit Fischer. Borchert was invited to in 1988’s Summer Olympics at Seoul, Korea, as an alternate to East Germany but did not participate. Her chance came after Fischer took maternity leave following the Seoul Olympics and she was awarded three gold medals during the 1988 World Championships in Plovdiv.

On March 3, 2003 Borchert made the decision to go back to Germany to seek nomination in 2004 for the German Olympic team. She was barred from competing in the World Championships for Germany in the 2003 World Championships through the Australian Canoe Federation not granting their consent in time enough.

Fischer made a comeback during the 1992 Summer Olympics at Barcelona, Spain, and old rivalries turned hostile after Borchert was unable to be nominated by Fischer for Fischer’s K-1 and K-2 and was then nominated in the K-4. The situation came to a head when the national coach Joseph Capousek, did not nominate Borchert for the 1993 World Championships; Capousek was at that time in relations with Fischer. Borchert quit her national squad in 1993. Later, the following month, in february 1994, she moved to Australia.

Katrin Borchert (born 4 November 1969) is an East German-born Australian sprint canoeist who participated in the late 1980s until 2001. Participating during three Summer Olympics she took home three medals including one silver (1992 K-4500 m to Germany) in addition to two bronze medals (both Australia, 1996: K-2 500 m, 2000: 500 meters). In her professional career, she’s represented four countries: East Germany, then West Germany, then Germany and finally, Australia.

Borchert and her coach Kersten Neumann, traveled for a trip to West Germany for the 1990 season. This was the year prior to the German reunion. Based in Essen the team competed at the 1990 World Championships and won three gold and one bronze medals. As of 1991, she was a member of the team for the newly- reunited Germany and took home two gold medals as well as an bronze award during the World Championships.

In 2009 Borchert was inducted into the Queensland Sport Hall of Fame.
