Her debut release was Fado Maior (2001) which earned her the Jose Afonso Award and was an instant success across South Korea. The album came after Nas maos do fado (2003) which featured tracks from Luis de Camoes, Florbela Espanca, Ary dos Santos and Antonio Lobo Antunes. The album was nominated in the Jose Afonso Award. In 2005 she recorded a duet song with Brazilian musician Martinho da Vila on the album Brasilatinidade as well as released a new album, Tudo ou nada featuring lyrics written composed by Vinicius De Moraes, Sophia de Mello Breyner and Antonio Lobo Antunes and others. Musician Bernardo Sassetti also collaborated on the track Minha Senhora das Dores. The album was revived in 2006, with the duets of two with Nay Matogrosso. Fados do Fado (2008/2009) is mostly traditional fado featuring covers of songs composed by Tony de Matos, Max, Tristao da Silva, Herminia Silva, Teresa Silva Carvalho, Joao Ferreira-Rosa as well as Amalia Rodrigues. In 2010 Katia released an greatest hits compilation called 10 years of asas do Fado. The album was which was followed by an album of live performances, Katia Live At Olympia (CD/DVD). Olympia (CD/DVD) that was recorded at 2012’s Olympia at the Olympia in Paris.

She is not as well known as other new fado singers such as Mariza because of the lack of promotion and major label backing, but her work has received awards. The singer has appeared on documentaries and television shows in both Portugal and abroad. She appeared several times as herself on the television series Só Visto! (2013, 2014, 2015), Há Tarde (2014), Herman 2010 (2010, 2013), Você na TV! (2013), Nico à Noite (2011), Companhia das Manhãs (2011), 5 Para a Meia Noite (2010), Uma Canção Para Ti (2009), Há Conversa (2009), Sexta à Noite (2008), Fados de Portugal (2000), along with the documentary Heaven’s Mirror: A Portuguese Voyage (2011) and the televisión movie Natal dos Hospitais 1996.

At the age of 15, she started playing a local instrument known as the violin da Terra, typical of the Azores and started playing in an ensemble called Rancho Folclorico de Santa Cecilia. After graduating from high school she was accepted into Medical school at Lisbon and graduated in the year 2000. In the years between she performed with the band Tuna Medica and with the Miguel Torga theater group at her school, and also an alternative rock group called Os Charruas.
