Katia Bellillo was born in Foligno in Umbria on the 17th of February in 1951. After graduating with a degree in social and educational work and focusing on mediation for families, at the University of Perugia, she was elected a councillor regional for Umbria in 1976. She was elected two times as an official of the Communist Refoundation Party (PCI) as vice-president for the Regional Council. She was later elected the city’s councilor of Perugia where she was a member of the Board of Directors of the local public transport company, and also was a part of the Management Committee of the local health authority. She was elected vice-president of the Provincial Council of Perugia and councilor responsible for the planning of wildlife Social services education as well as culture, sports, leisure, equality of opportunities.

At the 2001 general elections, she was elected again in her seat in the Chamber of Deputies in the single-member district of Orvieto. She was part of the XIV European Affairs Commission and the chairperson of the PDCI National Secretariat responsible for the Department of Civil Rights. Following the loss that was suffered by The Left – The Rainbow during the 2008 elections She teamed up along with Umberto Guidoni to form an organization called the Unite the Left movement. The group, which was initially an affiliate of the PDCI but later became an independent entity and later merged with Left Ecology Freedom (SEL) in the year 2010. Bellillo quit the party shortly thereafter. In the year 2019, she returned to politics, and was elected mayor of Perugia. Her campaign failed, getting 1.77 percent of the vote.

Katia Bellillo (born 17 February 1951, Foligno) is an Italian politician and former Minister. At first, she was a part of the PRC and then was a member of the PDCI in 1998, and was appointed Minister for Regional Affairs. She was later appointed the Minister of Equal Opportunities in the year 2000 In this capacity, she was successful in promoting a range of issues such as LGBT rights as well as women’s boxing.

In 1998, she took part in the internal divisions within the PCI which led to her joining the newly formed Party of Italian Communists (PDCI). The new party was a part of the coalition headed by the Democrats of the Left. Bellillo was a part of the first D’Alema government, and was in both the second and first governments as Minister of Regional Affairs. In the following Amato government, she was Minister of Equal Opportunities. In that capacity she co- founded the Commission for Equal Rights and Equality of Homosexuals together with Laura Balbo which, among other accomplishments, allowed homosexuals to be organ and blood donors. She also initiated a national campaign to eliminate gender discrimination and to promote the sport of female boxing.

In 2005, both Bellillo and the actress Sabrina Ferilli supported the referendum on assisted fertilisation. Ferilli later told Gente that despite respecting the practice, she personally preferred adoption. Bellillo denounced her in an interview in Corriere della Sera and was unsuccessfully sued by Ferilli due to parliamentary immunity.
