Cramer has been wed with David G. Hartwell from 1997 until his demise in January of 2016. The couple lives together with her family in Westport, New York, with her two children.

Cramer was the editor of hypertext fiction for Eastgate Systems in the early 1990s. She was a part of the Global Connection Project which was which was a collaborative project between Carnegie Mellon University, NASA, Google, and National Geographic employing Google Earth as well as other tools in the aftermath of the 2005 Pakistan earthquake.
