She began her involvement in politics in the year 1985, when she was elected to the Cork Corporation for the Workers Party. Lynch gained notoriety in the campaign against the introduction of service fees through the company. After the party split in 1991, Lynch along with other members from the Cork organization were initially undecided about their stance however, she later chose to join the former president of the party Proinsias De Rossa as well as majority members of its TDs into a new organization, which later adopted its designation of Democratic Left. Lynch became the first to be elected Dail Eireann in the role of Democratic Left TD for Cork North-Central during a by- election in 1994, which was triggered by the demise of Labour Party TD Gerry O’Sullivan. Lynch was sacked of her Dail seat in the 1997 general election, but was elected again in the 2002 general election. On April 8, 2008, she took part in a debate in which she wrote a letter proving the behavior of parents for a person who was accused of raping his teenage sisters. The accused was found guilty and sentenced to 13 years. In a statement, she stated: “Having heard an interview with one of the victims in the case, who was clearly distressed by my letter and having considered the matter and discussed it with colleagues I now accept that it was inappropriate for a TD to have become involved in any way in a case of such seriousness. If my action has in any way added to the ordeal of the two victims in this case, then I deeply regret that and offer them my apologies.”

She lost her seat at the 2016 general election. She remained as a junior minister in an acting capacity during prolonged talks on government formation.
