Kat Fajardo is one of the most popular and richest Comics Artist who was born on January 16, 1991 in New York, United States. Katherine “Kat” Fajardo (born on the 16th of January, 1991) is a Latina freelance comic artist, illustrator and editor who is based in New York City, New York. Her work focuses upon Latinx culture and acceptance of oneself.

The work of Fajardo is heavily influenced by her own personal desire to find a complete identity in her role as an American Latina of Colombian and Honduran roots. Her 17-page mini comic Gringa! is a candid account of her struggles “through assimilation, racism, and fetishization of Latin culture”. The front cover of Gringa! portrays the principal persona, Fajardo herself, in an era of cultural division. The top half of her dress is adorned with the stripes and stars of America and the other proudly sports the classic Latin American dress. The Latinx side her hair is long and black; on the other the hair is bleached shorter and lighter in an effort to blend to American cultural. The first couple of pages of “Gringa! The book depicts a ferocious attack against the immigrants who come from American protesters with posters that read “‘Diversity’=White Genocide” and “Return to Sender!” Fajardo considers the challenges people of immigrants face–“leaving the families they love behind putting at risk their lives” only to be welcomed into America to a culture of unjustified discrimination and hostility. In the end, she realizes that she is entitled to have pride in her culture, yet she isn’t able to publicly celebrate it. She points to a myriad of causes: insufficient Latino studies in universities as well as representation in TV and films, fetishization, and discrimination from her peers and the pressure of her own family members to become an “proper lady” and “accept Machismo as the norm.” She strives to be a model and appear as the typical white American woman however “mi raza” (literally translating to “my race”) holds her back. After a few years, when she has discussed the common experiences of Latinx young people, she discovers that the discrimination she faces because of her race is no longer a problem to her, but instead “fuel” for her own imagination. She closes her comic with pride of her self-discovery, self-acceptance and self-discovery and hopes to make use of her art to help contribute to greater portrayal of Latinx and Hispanics in the media.

In 2017 Fajardo was awarded an Emerging Talent Award at the Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC). The year before, Fajardo was awarded a Massachusetts Independent Comics Expo (MICE) Mini-Grant for her work on the !Bandida! series.

Fajardo is an early-generation American Latina who was born in New York City, New York. Her parents were both immigrants, coming both from Honduras as well as Colombia respectively. She went to Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School in which she was a student of art from 2005 to 2009. She then received a BFA at the School of Visual Arts in 2013 where she studied cartooning illustration and animation.
