On the 15th of December, 2015 the club declared that Hjulmand was to be the new manager of Nordsjaelland beginning 1 January 2016. Hjulmand succeeded in getting his team on the right track after the club placed 9th overall in 15-16 Danish Superliga. The following two seasons, he guided Nordsjaelland to a 6th place and third place. In January 2019, Hjulmand was linked to RSC Anderlecht, but Nordsjaelland required a payment that Anderlecht was not willing to pay, and rather Fred Rutten was appointed. After the contract was canceled with Anderlecht Hjulmand declared that he was leaving Nordsjaelland at the end of summer 2019, at the conclusion the term of his agreement.
On 25 March 2019 Hjulmand left Nordsjælland by mutual consent after having secured a spot in the Championship round of the 2018–19 Danish Superliga.
On May 15th, 2014 Hjulmand has been confirmed to succeed Thomas Tuchel as of 1. FSV Mainz 05 for the next season. The first two games he played in charge came in the third Qualifying Round of the Europa League. In the first game in the first leg against Asteras Tripoli Mainz took a 1-0 lead. In the subsequent leg, Mainz lost 3-1 and they were knocked out of the competition. Then Mainz were eliminated in the opening stage of the DFB Cup after losing to Chemnitzer FC in a shoot-out. In the eight league matches he played, Mainz were undefeated and placed third. After that, Mainz had won only one of their 13 games and fell to 14th position. In the end, on 17 February in 2015 the club was terminated. His final game was a loss of 4-2 against Borussia Dortmund.

Hjulmand started his career with Randers Freja in 1987 where he played for four seasons, after which he signed with Herlev IF in the winter of 1992. He played for Herlev IF two seasons and was then transferred towards B.93 at the end of the season in 1995. After three years with B93, at the age of 26, Hjulmand had to end his career as a professional footballer because of a knee injury.
Hjulmand was appointed head coach of Lyngby starting on 1 January 2006 until July 7, 2008, when he took on the role of assistant coach for FC Nordsjaelland. He was appointed successor to Morten Wieghorst, who was head coach of FC Nordsjaelland taking over from 1 July 2011 to 18 May 2014, when the last game he played as head coach for Nordsjaelland with a draw of 2-2 against Brondby. Nordsjaelland have won their first Danish championship under Hjulmand as their head coach.
In June 2019 it was announced that Hjulmand will replace Åge Hareide as manager of the Danish national football team, when Hareide’s contract expires after the UEFA Euro 2020 tournament.
