She also participated in track and tennis. She graduated with the degree of bachelor of science in Columbia University in 1980 and was a Dean’s list student. She was an assistant nursing assistant for 6 months before she decided to change her mind after stating that she had “were a lot of frustrations.” She was a financial analyst for The Wall Street brokerage firm of P. R. Herzig and Company for 10 years.

She was married to Peter Marshall in 1987. The year 1988 saw her included on the New York Times roster of female weightlifting champions within the 82.5 kilograms (182 pounds) category. The year 1989 was the time she was crowned the women’s heavyweight division lifting 507 pounds (230 kg). She won silver medals in international competitions–Jakarta (1988), Manchester (1989) and Sarajevo (1990). As of 1989, Marshall took home the title of the heavyweight women’s division by lifting the weight of 507 pounds (230 kg). Marshall was seen by the officials of women’s weightlifting as being a symbol of the sport as well as Mary Ann Rinehart described her as an “fantastic spokesperson” who “represents the true meaning of the amateur athlete.” The year 1999 was the time that Marshall took home a silver medal at the Open middle heavyweight class (+75 pounds or +165 3/4 lbs). She has been a eight-time United States Weightlifting Federation (USWF) champion, and New York State record holder for the United States Powerlifting Federation (USPF). It is her first female in history to lift over 200 pounds. Snatch is another Olympic sport in which an erect barbell is lowered from a platform and suspended arms that are locked in a steady, continuous motion and then lowered as high as is possible usually to mid-chest height. Marshall has his IWF World Record for the lifting of snatch at 248 lbs (112 kilograms).

In 1991, in a send-off of the United States team to the Olympics, Marshall set “Festival records for the snatch (198 1/4), clean and jerk (264 1/2) and total (462 3/4) at 181 3/4 pounds.” By 1991, she had won a total of one world championship (1987), 63 American records, and 8 world records. She appeared on The Oprah Winfrey Show, the Joan Rivers Show, ESPN, CNN, and various other prime time news and sports broadcasts. In 2011, she became a coach at CrossFit in Shrewsbury, New Jersey.

During these years, Marshall continued to compete in weightlifting events; in 2006, competing at age 50, she set three records in the women’s 50–54 category. The first two records came in the snatch and clean and jerk events, and her total of 143 kilograms (315 lb) set a record. She also was described as having bench-pressed 238 pounds (108 kg), and made a “475 pound [215 kg] dead lift”.

However, in the 1980s and later women’s sports were growing in popularity. Marshall’s first event was a qualifying event to the 1979 Empire State Games in White Plains, New York. Marshall won her first national championship in the year 1981. In in the 80s Marshall was a winner in her class 6 times in seven, and established the national record for 45 times. The year 1983 was the first time Marshall received information from the men’s coaches Mark LeMenager that the women’s weightlifting record was established 75 years earlier when Katie Sandwina, a circus performer, lifted 130-kilograms (290 pounds) overhead. According to Drechsler the record set by Sandwina was the catalyst that pushed Marshall to push herself harder. Her program of training consisted of “more squatting, pressing and other strength building exercises.” The year 1984 was the time she was able to get to the Guinness Sports Record Book with 289 pounds (131 kilogram) clean and jerk, which is an Olympic event with the two- stage lifting of a barbell over the head of the athlete. The lift was higher than that of the Sandwina record. In 1984 Marshall was deemed the world’s best-known record holder for weightlifting for women with an 82.5 kg category in the light of her results of a competition held in Florida. As of 1985, Marshall took 329 pounds (137 kg) in the clean-and-jerk lifting. When she competed in 1987, which was the very first year there was a World Championship for women who weightlifted, Marshall competed for the United States against a surprisingly powerful group from China. Marshall not only won the bodyweight class with a margin of 12.5 kilograms (28 pounds) however she also surpassed every athlete in the category of unlimited bodyweight. She was the top performer in the competition and earned the title of the World’s Strongest Woman. In the Guinness Sports Record Book credited her as one of the “world’s most powerful female” with her 303 lbs (137 kg) above the head. She was the winner of the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) World Championship. She was referred to as being the “top American finisher” in the 181.75 pounds (82.44 kg) pounds weight class. She stated:

Dr. Karyn Marshall, DC, (born 1956) is an American Olympic weightlifter who won the world’s first women’s championship in weightlifting in 1987. She also made the 60 American as well as world record for women’s weightlifting and, in 1985, became the first woman to lift and clean over 300 pounds (136 kg) and did it by lifting 329 pounds (137 kg). Marshall became an acupuncturist and owns a private clinic at Shrewsbury, New Jersey while fighting breast cancer since. As of 2011, Marshall received an induction into the USA Weightlifting Hall of Fame and admitted into the International Weightlifting Hall of Fame in the year 2015. Marshall gave an TED speech in 2015.

Marshall began her training in the year 1978. Marshall was coached by a number of skilled weightlifters like Arthur Drechsler and Mark Chasnov. In the 1970s, there were no national, local as well as international events for female weightlifters. Moreover, women’s weightlifting was not viewed as much as a legitimate sports instead of an “freak show”. She wrote in Sports Illustrated in 1987 that “people think women weightlifters are squat and muscle-bound, with all the intelligence of amoebas”.

The most exciting moment was being the last American to lift at the 1987 Women’s World Championship. The Chinese had dominated the competition, winning each of the other weight classes, and I was the last American hope. Lifting the most weight of the competition and winning three gold medals for myself, my team and my country was a most intense feeling.
