The native of Dalen, Kroon showed his potential as an amateur by being the winner of the pro Ronde van Drenthe race in the year 1996. Kroon became a part of the Rabobank youth team in 1997 and was able to win numerous amateur races over the course of two years. He was in the 1999 season when he made the move to the senior team. The few times he won included stage 8, which took place on Bastille Day, of the 2002 Tour de France. Kroon and his teammate Erik Dekker, finished in the seven-man group. Kroon was victorious on a stage of the debut Tour de France with the aid of the more skilled Dekker. Kroon was the leader of the mountain jersey contest throughout the three Grand Tours, though his lead didn’t last until the very end.
On August 10, 2005, the man stated that up until 2007 he would be a part of Saxo Bank. He was a part of helping Frank Schleck win the Amstel Gold Race by disrupting Schleck’s chase when he tried to attack; Kroon finished fourth. Kroon was able to finish on the podium, winning La Fleche Wallonne, third ahead of Schleck. Kroon was also 2nd in the 2009 Amstel Gold Race, just in front of Serguei Ivanov.
