In October of 2011, Edtstadler moved to Section IV (Criminal Law) within the Ministry of Justice. Since 2014, she has been an expert on personal matters in the Cabinet that was headed by Minister Justice Wolfgang Brandstetter, where she was involved in reforms of the Criminal Code as well as of the criminal law that relates to juvenile offenders. In the early part of 2015, she was promoted to Senior Prosecutor of the Corruption Police in Vienna’s office, and was assigned to the Ministry of Justice. In May 2016, she was employed as a legal professional for the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) located in Strasbourg.
From 2017 until 2019, Edtstadler served as state secretary in the Ministry of the Interior.
In the 2019 European elections, Edtstadler was number two on her party’s list, following Othmar Karas. As Member of the European Parliament, she served on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs and on the Subcommittee on Human Rights. Within the centre-right European People’s Party Group (EPP), she led the ÖVP delegation.
In 2010, Edtstadler handed down relatively severe sentences to two brothers who were exemplary who were accused for causing injury to a policeman in protest to protest the policy on asylum of the minister of the Interior Maria Fekter. The court of appeals in Linz changed the rulings in significant areas, because the public prosecutor also considered the sentences too burdensome. The regional president tribunal Hans Rathgeb praised Edtstadler’s work in the courtsaying “She was a very goal-oriented and experienced judge”.

Edtstadler is the child of the former director of the Salzburg state provincial legislature Karl W. Edtstadler, and was born within Elixhausen in the district of Salzburg-Umgebung. She was a student at the primary education in Elixhausen and later went on to attend the Salzburg Fine Arts Grammar School. Edtstadler went on to study law in Salzburg’s University of Salzburg and graduated in 2004 with a magistra diploma. Court clerkships with the Mondsee district court as well as at the Salzburg Regional Court followed. In 2006, she was a judge’s trainee at the regional court of higher level in Linz as well in 2008. became a judge in the Salzburg regional court.
Since 18 December 2017, Edtstadler has been serving secretary of state in the Austrian Ministry of the Interior, in the government of Chancellor Sebastian Kurz.
