McDaniel became the very first actress of color to be awarded an Oscar and Burns was the first actress from Africa to be awarded the highly sought-after British Olivier award. Burns first appearance as Hi-Hat Hattie in the Players Theater in Columbus, Ohio in 1991. She then performed the role in various other cities including Off Broadway and Off-Broadway in New York and the Florida Studio Theater in Sarasota, FL. She appeared in the show in 2006 in celebration of her Hattie McDaniel stamp. She performed it again in the spring of 2018, making her return to stage after having to deal with various health problems. In 2007, she underwent surgery to eliminate an 10 pound goiter that was forming in her neck. The procedure significantly affected her singing and speaking voice and she sought out therapists and vocal coaches to restore the mezzo-soprano vocal quality she had lost.

Burns gained notoriety through Her Drama Desk Award winning and Tony Award nominated performance of Queenie in the 1983 Broadway revival of Jerome Kern’s Show Boat. The show was made available to Broadway through The Houston Grand Opera with a show on the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. prior to the show’s Broadway debut. The show then moved onto its current London theatre in the year 1991 Burns received one of the Olivier Award for her performance in the production. It marked the first occasion that that a Black artist had been awarded this award. This London production was staged in collaboration with Opera North and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Burns played his role as Queenie in the production of Opera national du Rhin in Strasbourg, France in 2002.
Burns TV credits include her role as Hottie Joseph from the 1985 TV film The Parade with Geraldine Page and the role as the Duke of Ephesus/Luce for The 1988 PBS show of William Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors with the Flying Karamazov Brothers. The performance was recorded live at Lincoln Center of the 1987 Broadway revival. She was Karla Klown in the show. Klown on One of a Kind (1980 syndicated children’s show) as well as True Blue with Robert Earl Jones. She been a guest in Merv Griffin, The Wogan Show and the Wogan Show in London and, in 2012, on the It’s All Great show “A Karla Burns Special” with Sierra Scott.
Burns attended Wichita State University from which she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Education and a BA in Theater Performance. She was awarded an honorary doctorate in 2016 from Wichita State. After leaving college, Burns appeared throughout the world in musical and classical theater productions, operas and revues. Highlights of her career include performances with the Paris Opera, the Teatro Real in Madrid, Cairo Opera House, and the Royal Shakespeare Company in London. She has also appeared in performances at the Metropolitan Opera as Lily in George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess and in Noa Ain’s Trio at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
