Karl Foster Dean (born September 20th 1955) is an American politician who was the Mayor for the District of 68 in Nashville, Tennessee from 2007 until 2015. A part of the Democratic Party, he previously was Nashville’s Director of the Law in conjunction with the Mayor Bill Purcell from 1999 to 2007. Then, in 1990, 1994, and 1998, he was appointed as the city’s public defender. Dean who is an attorney by profession is now an adjunct professor of law for Vanderbilt University Law School.

In March 2005 Karl Dean wrote that Mayor Bill Purcell could seek a third term in spite of a referendum held in 1994 regarding “any elected office authorized or created by the [Metro] charter.” This is because the charter of 1963 states that there’s a three-term limit for mayors. The 1994 amendment occurred amid an effort to establish limitations on the term limit in Congress and local public debates about Metro Council. By 2013, Nashville had reached the lowest crime numbers and homicide rate in its history.
