Taylor, often referred to by the name of Karen Taylor Stewart (born March 6 1952) is an American artist who is forensic and portrait who has helped settle crimes for a range police departments across the world. Her specialization is in composite images, adult and child age progression, postmortem drawings and facial reconstruction for forensics. Around the middle of 1980s Taylor was the first to pioneer facial reconstruction in two dimensions through drawing features of the face on the frontal and lateral images of skulls that were based on human anthropological information. Taylor is also well-known for his work as aforensic artist teacher and professional sculptor of fine art portraits and expert on the face of a human.

Taylor was the author of the comprehensive book, Forensic Art and Illustration, CRC Press, Boca Raton, London, New York, Washington DC, 2001.

Taylor was featured in American Artist Drawing magazine, Summer 2006 in an article titled, “Understanding Faces from the Inside Out” by Edith Zimmerman.

Taylor was a forensic art instructor for over twenty years at the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia (through the fall of 2006) and other law enforcement academies, universities, art and medical schools internationally. She also conducts face-related training workshops for fine artists and specializes in highly accurate and subtly expressive portraits in bronze.

After many years of successes as a forensic artist helping to capture criminals and identify those who were their targets, Taylor was named one of the “Texas Women of the Century” in 1999. This was an honor to those who were the most powerful 100 Texas women from the previous century. The twenty-four participating organisations that comprise the Women of the Century Project have described her as “the premier forensic artist in the world”. Taylor was honored along with other recipient, Barbara Bush, Dale Evans Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison, Lady Bird Johnson, Barbara Jordon, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor Governor Ann Richards, Mary Kay Ash, Elisabet Ney and other people.

In 2002, she was the first woman to receive the “Dondero Award” from the International Association for Identification for her “outstanding contribution in the field of scientific identification”. Previous Dondero Award recipients include J. Edgar Hoover and Dr. Henry Lee.
