The nation’s most highly rated woman, Karen Sheperd continued her dominance, defeating Belinda Davis, Cynthia Rothrock and Lori Clapper in Women’s Black Belt Forms at the Diamond Nationals on May 2 1981 , in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

In 1992 Sheperd was voted the “Most Popular Female Martial Arts Superstar” by readers of Inside Kung Fu Magazine. In 1997 Sheperd was inducted into the prestigious Black Belt Hall of Fame as “Woman of the Year”. In 2002, she was inducted into the Martial Arts History Museum Hall of Fame.

Sheperd became the first female to be formally rated as the #1 World Karate Champion in forms She was a champion for two years in 1978 and 1979. Prior to 1979, there were separate rankings that were available for female competitors, but there were no female form athletes. In most cases, they competed against men Sheperd believed that more women would participate with an award to fight for. She began a petition campaign to create the title and enlisted the support of tournament organizers to start with a separate form division for female athletes. Sheperd’s editor at Karate Illustrated Magazine, Renardo Barden, created the first official ratings for female competitors in forms in 1979. After accumulating the most 1st-place points in the Karate competition circuit, Sheperd was awarded the top rating from Karate Illustrated Magazine for 1979 and 1980.

Sheperd is the only female to ever take home her Grand Championship title over all female and male forms of competition during the US Open Battle of the Superstars at the Bayfront Center in St. Petersburg, Florida on November 1st 1981. Her triumph by using her trademark chain whip was broadcast in the “The World of People” TV show.

After filming Shinobi Ninja in Japan in 1981, Sheperd retired from competition to study acting in Los Angeles, California.
