Karen Parshall is one of the most popular and richest Mathematician who was born on July 7, 1955 in Virginia, United States. Her academic area of expertise is the growth of maths in the USA during the latter part of the 19th century, and into the early the 20th century (particularly the Chicago School). In one instance she has studied her work by Leonard Dickson, who was profoundly influenced by his contacts with German mathematicians, such as Felix Klein at the time of the Columbian Exposition of 1893. She also focuses on the development of algebra. She edited the letters to James Joseph Sylvester published by Oxford University Press and wrote an autobiography of Sylvester.
In the academic year of 1996/97 Parshall was an academic Guggenheim Fellow. In 1994, she was invited to speak in the International Congress of Mathematicians (ICM) in Zurich (Mathematics in National Contexts (1875-1900) A Global Review). Since 2002, she’s been an associate to the Academie internationale d’histoire des sciences in Paris. From 1996 until 1999, she was the editor of Historia Mathematica. Parshall was a member of the managing body of the History of Science Society and from 1998 until 2001 in the American Mathematical Society (AMS).
From 1982 until 1987, Parshall taught as an assistant at Sweet Briar College and in 1987/88 she taught at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Since 1988, she has been teaching the subject of history of math as well as maths and science history in the University of Virginia, where she was promoted in 1988 to assistant professor, and in 1993 as an associate professor, and then a professor in 1999. She was an adjunct Professor of The Australian National University in Canberra as well as within the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (1985 and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (1985 and) as well as in the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris (2016).

Karen Hunger Parshall (born 1955, Virginia; nee Karen Virginia Hunger) is a famous American mathematic historian. Parshall is currently the Commonwealth Professor of History and Mathematics at the University of Virginia with a joint appointment within the Corcoran Department of History and Department of Mathematics. From 2009 until 2012, Parshall was Associate Dean for Social Sciences within the College of Arts in Sciences at UVA in 2016. From 2016 to 2019 , she was Chair for the Corcoran Department of History.
Parshall was a student of Romance languages, including French and mathematical sciences at University of Virginia, where she received her master’s degrees in math in the year 1978. She received her PhD in 1982 in the area of the history of mathematics at the University of Chicago under the supervision of historical scholar Allen G. Debus (1926-2009) and mathematics professor Israel Herstein. Her dissertation topic is the evolution of algebraic theory and that from Joseph Wedderburn (The contributions of J. H. M. Wedderburn to the theory of algebras 1900-1910).
In 2012, she became an inaugural fellow of the American Mathematical Society. She is the 2018 winner of the Albert Leon Whiteman Memorial Prize of the American Mathematical Society “for her outstanding work in the history of mathematics, and in particular, for her work on the evolution of mathematics in the USA and on the history of algebra, as well as for her substantial contribution to the international life of her discipline through students, editorial work, and conferences.”
