After being nominated five times for the Naoki Prize, Himeno won the 150th Naoki Prize for her semi-autobiographical 2013 novel Showa Dog (Zhao He noQuan , Showa no inu) . Himeno was in the gym at the moment of the announcement, and was forced to hurry to the press conference wearing her tracksuit. She was known to joke with reporters during her interviews.

In 2003, her novel I, Ra, Ku (tsu, I, ra, Ku C,R.A.S.H.) is a novel that takes young girls from the second grade through their first love and sexual encounters it was nominated for the Naoki Prize. Tsu, i, ku was later turned into a single part in the film anthology 2005 Female (huimeiru) which starred Kyoko Hasegawa. Her novel from 2005 Haruka Eiti (harukaeitei , Haruka at 80) and her 2010 novel Riaru shinderera (riarushinderera , Real Cinderella) were also nominated for the Naoki Prize in their respective times, but failed to get the award. In 2009, Himeno worked alongside manga illustrator Ebine Yamaji to write the novel Shimi (Qing Zhi (shimi) ) .
