Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on February 20, 1964 in Delhi, India. Kanwaljit Singh Bakshi (Punjabi the name is kNvljiit SiNgh Bkh born on 20th February, 1964) is an Indian born New Zealand politician, and a part of the National Party. He was elected to the 49th New Zealand Parliament in 2008 via the party’s list.
In June 2010, the Military Manoeuvres Act Repeal Bill was drawn from the members’ ballot. The bill became law in April of 2012.
Bakshi voted against the first reading of Louisa Wall’s same-sex marriage bill in August 2012. Bakshi later attended a protest against Louisa Wall’s bill stating to the crowd of around 250: “We understand that God made us and we are firm believers (that) marriage is between a man and woman, I tell you, the majority of the National Party MPs voted against this bill. There were only three Labour party MPs who voted against this bill. So you can understand who believes in Christianity, who believes in this bill. It is the National Party.” Bakshi later conceded that in fact a majority of National MP’s had voted for the bill.
In 2016 Bakshi faced criticism for comparing international students to a commodity such as fridges. In an interview, following a question about treating Indian students as “economic commodities”, Bakshi said “if New Zealand gets fridges from China and they’re faulty then they send them back”.
In the beginning of 2009, and then again during August of 2009 Bakshi was investigated by the police as well as Immigration New Zealand over a scheme that allegedly involved him in making fraudulent job offer to Indian applicants to New Zealand. Bakshi later was cleared by police of wrongdoing but not an interview with the primary complainant , who had already left New Zealand.

According to his biography page Bakshi is from Delhi, India. His father was politician. Bakshi was a student at Guru Harkrishan Public School and earned a degree in Commerce at the University of Delhi in 1985. The first job he had after graduating was working in the family’s shipping company, where he later became an executive in marketing. Bakshi got married to Irvinder Kaur in 1989.
Bakshi is the first New Zealand Indian and also the first Sikh MP. Bakshi was elected to Parliament in the 2008 election through the list of the party. He is the Chairman for the Law and Order Select Committee and a member of the Commerce Select Committee.
Kanwaljit accompanied New Zealand’s Prime Minister John Key on his visit to India in June 2011. He has been recognised for fostering ties between New Zealand and India. Bakshi has also assisted the New Zealand Government in publishing their policies in Indian languages such as Hindi, Gujrati and Punjabi for the benefit of Indian Community. He also received the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award at a ceremony in India in January 2015 for building a positive profile of people of Indian Origin in New Zealand and South Pacific.
