On 10 March 2016, it was revealed that in October 2015, Kumar was fined by the JNU administration for “misbehaving” with a girl student and “threatening” her. Kumar had allegedly been urinating in the open in June 2015 and became abusive and threatened the female student who objected against his behaviour. The AISF stated that the case was an attempt to defame Kumar.

On 8 March 2016, speaking at an International Women’s Day event, Kumar referred to the rape of Kashmiri women committed by personnel of the Indian Army. This was criticised as being “anti-national” by the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM). The BJYM filed a complaint against Kumar and JNU professor Nivedita Menon, alleging them of making “anti-national” statements. A sedition and defamation case was filed against Kumar in a civil court in Patna.

In September of 2015, Kumar became president of the JNU Students’ Union which represents the AISF.

Kanhaiya Kumar was a student until the class of VI in Madhya Vidyalaya, Masnadpur, before he enrolled in R. K. C. High School in Barauni. In his school years, Kumar took part in various plays and other activities arranged through IPTA (Indian People’s Theater Association) which is a left-leaning culture group that dates back to the time of India’s independence struggle. Kumar passed the Class X board examinations in 2002, securing an A grade. After high school, Kumar joined the Ram Ratan Singh College in Mokama in the state of Mokama, where he studied sciences in the classes XI-XII. Then, he earned an education in geography from the College of Commerce, Arts and Science, Patna in 2007. While attending The Patna College of Commerce, Kumar started to get involved in politics for students. Kumar joined the AISF in the year 2000, and later, he was chosen as delegate for its meeting in Patna. After finishing his post- graduation by obtaining an MS in sociology at Nalanda Open University in Patna and again getting a top class, he relocated to Delhi and, after scoring first at the entrance exam in 2011, he enrolled at Jawaharlal Nehru University where he was awarded a doctorate on African study in the School of International Studies. The doctoral dissertation was completed in February, 2019, and was titled The Decolonisation Process and Sociological Transformation within South Africa, 1994-2015.

On 10 March 2016, Kumar was manhandled and abused on the JNU campus by a man who accused him of being a deshdrohi (transl. traitor ). Addressing students later in the day, Kumar said such incidents couldn’t scare him. “You can kill me, you can silence me but you cannot scare me. But before you kill me, think about Rohith Vemula. When you killed one Rohith, several Rohiths came forward. If you kill someone else now, many others will stand up. This is all happening as part of a plan.”
