Kanako Otsuji is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on December 16, 1974 in Nara Prefecture, Japan. Kanako Otsuji (Wei Sip kanaZi , Otsuji Kanako, born on December 16, 1974, in Nara) is an Japanese LGBT activists for rights as well as a an elected member of the House of Representatives for the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan. She was also a Member of the House of Councilors, and an ex-member of the Osaka Prefectural Assembly (April 2003-April 2007). Seven women were elected within the 110-member Osaka Assembly, Otsuji represented the Sakai-ku Sakai City constituency. The seat was created in May 2013 following her party’s member in the House quit, Otsuji became the nation’s first openly homosexual Member of the Diet However, her term of office ended in July. She won a seat during the general election of 2017 and made history as the only openly-gay member in the House of Representatives.
On August 5, 2005, the Otsuji wrote an autobiography titled Coming Out A Journey to Find my True Self (kaminguauto~Zi Fen rashisawoJian tsukeruLu , Kamingu auto – Jibun rashisa or mitsukeru tabi) In doing so became Japan’s first politician who was lesbian in the days leading up to Tokyo Pride in
- Tokyo Pride.
Otsuji did not stand for re-election in April 2007. Her first term in the Osaka Assembly expired on 29 April 2007, but in July 2007 she appeared on the official candidate list of the Democratic Party of Japan, becoming the first- ever openly homosexual serious contender for election to the National Diet. Otsuji received 38,230 votes, far short of securing the seat, so there were no openly homosexual elected officials in Japan until the election of Taiga Ishikawa, an assemblyman in Tokyo’s Toshima ward, in 2011.
In June 2007, Otsuji held a public wedding ceremony in Nagoya with her partner Maki Kimura, although same-sex marriages are not legally recognised in Japan.
The Otsuji government in 2005 played key in bringing about changes in the law that allow gay couples to lease accommodation with Osaka Prefectural Housing Corporation. Osaka Prefectural Housing Corporation, which was previously only available to married couples. Since marriages between same genders aren’t legally recognized in Japanese law and law, gay couples living in Osaka were previously difficult to obtain public housing.

Otsuji is a native of Nara Prefecture, but grew up in Hannan, Osaka. As a young girl in Kobe Otsuji won the Asian Junior karate champion, and later, she enrolled in Seoul University to study Korean and tae kwon-do. She was defeated to TKO against Yoriko Okamoto at the 1999 Olympics. She had hoped to make it into in the Sydney Olympics during 2000, but she was not able to make the team for the national team. After returning to Japan and was enrolled in Doshisha University in Kyoto, which was where she began to become fascinated by politics.
Otsuji ran for office in the Osaka Assembly as she was an Independent during April of 2003, aged 28 being the youngest person to be chosen to serve in her seat at the Osaka Assembly. She was later a member of Rainbow and Greens, a new Japanese political alliance that is committed to creating a different society that is based on eco-politics with participatory politics and decentralisation. She was a candidate in during the 2007 House of Councillors election on the Democratic Party of Japan list for the proportional representation block for the nation but she was not elected. However, in May 2013, the incumbent Member Kunihiko Muroi, Otsuji took over his place becoming the very first gay Diet member. Because Otsuji didn’t run for office in 2013’s House of Councillors election, she was dismissed at the close of her term in July.
In June 2006, Otsuji visited the United States on a trip sponsored by the International Visitor Leadership Program of the US Department of State. During her visit she met representatives from the National Center for Transgender Equality, the National Association of LGBT Community Centers, the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, Freedom to Marry and the Stonewall Democrats.
