Andini was born on May 6, 1986, the youngest child of the filmmaker Garin Nugroho. Though she did not pursue cinematography because of the fear of “work[ing] in her father’s shadow” She started studying photography while studying in high school junior with the intention that she could “capture people’s life and behavior”. When she was in high school senior, students often inquired about her father questions regarding filmmaking, questions that Andini later claimed “ashamed” her because she did not know anything about the work of her father. Later, she became involved in various film-related committees. Andini earned a degree in sociology from Deakin University in Melbourne, Australia.

After returning back to Indonesia, Andini began to be director. She directed the music video for bands like Ungu and Slank and also documentaries about songs and oceans. One of them, Lagu untuk Tukik (A Song for Tukik) was about turtles and the ocean in the Wakatobi Regency – which is part of the Coral Triangle – and was shown as part of the Goethe Institute’s Science Film Festival in 2012. In 2009, she was a part-time assistant to her father in the direction of Generasi Biru (The Blue Generation) which was about the group Slank.

In March 2012 Andini married fellow director Ifa Isfansyah. The film he directed in 2011 Sang Penari (The Dancer) was a strong competitor against The Mirror Never Lies at the IFF. In May of the year, she announced they were working to make her next feature film. It was to be about nature and children.
