While as a student, he enrolled in ABVP during his time at Osmania University and in the year 1980, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. Although he was able to land an enviable job due to the high demand the subject faced, fueled by a desire to serve the public, he decided to get into politics. In the years since, he has risen to different ranks within the party starting to Hyderabad City General Secretary in 1994 to Hyderabad City President from 1995-1999. He ran for office his first time for the Musheerabad Assembly Constituency in 1994 and was defeated narrowly by Congress candidate Kodanda Reddy but then got elected again from the same district in 1999 by a massive victory of 18,567. He was also appointed Floor Leader Deputy during the previous AP Legislative Assembly. Between between 2004 to 2009, the AP Legislative Assembly was defeated in a narrow margin to Congress candidates.
