Flavio Basso was born Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul in Rio Grande do Sul on the 26th of January, 1968. His dad was a scientist while his mother was a educator from German descent. He began playing the guitar classically at thirteen years old. He has cited Paul McCartney, Syd Barrett, John Lennon, Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger and Brian Jones as some of his main influences. In 1984, he founded the rockabilly group TNT along with his childhood buddies Marcio Petracco Felipe Jotz and Charles Master and was eventually joined by Nei Van Soria. TNT gained national recognition when their hits “Entra Nessa” and “Estou na Mao” were featured in the compilation Rock Grande do Sul, designed to highlight rock groups that hail from Rio Grande do Sul (such as Engenheiros do Hawaii, Os Replicantes, DeFalla and Garotos da Rua) and was released through RCA Records. In 1986, just one year prior to when TNT released their debut Studio album Van Soria and Basso quit the group due to differences in their creative direction between them and RCA to create their own band, Os Cascavelletes, which even though it had a brief existence, was able to release a single EP, a studio album, and one demo. Their self- titled irreverent sound which was defined by their comical and explicit sexually explicit lyrics that they described being “porno rock”. The most well-known song by the band was their 1989 smash popular “Nega Bombom”, featured in the soundtrack to the television show Top Model.
When he died Basso’s old Os Cascavelletes bandmate Frank Jorge stated that Basso had been the “tireless creator, a guy who broke away from all commonplaces and predictability”. Poet and musician Rogerio Skylab has once stated that Basso was among his main influences. in addition to interviewing him on the talk-show Matador de Passarinho he has also performed one of his tracks “Na Casa de Mamae” (for Skygirls), “Eu e Minha Ex” (for Trilogia of Carnavais 25 Anos of De Lapide or Carreira) as well as “A Marchinha Psicotica de Dr. Soup” (for Critica da Faculdade of Cu). Former Os Replicantes vocalist Wander Wildner covered “Um Lugar do Caralho” for his 1996 solo debut Baladas Sangrentas. Rock group Ira! recorded “Miss Lexotan 6mg Garota” in their 1998 album Voce Nao Sabe Eu Sou.
In 2006, six of Basso’s songs – “Um Lugar do Caralho”, “Querida Superhist x Mr. Frog”, “Canção para Dormir”, “The Freaking Alice (Hippie Under Groove)”, “As Mesmas Coisas” and “A Marchinha Psicótica de Dr. Soup” – were included in the soundtrack of the animated film Wood & Stock: Sexo, Orégano e Rock’n’Roll, directed by Otto Guerra.
Alongside Tatá Aeroplano he wrote and directed the short film Apartment Jazz, which was broadcast for the first time by MTV in 2010. In 2011 he appeared in “Kreuko”, a segment of the anthology film Mundo Invisível, alongside José Wilker and Sônia Braga. In 2015 he began work on a second short, Jane’s Nightmare; a trailer was uploaded to YouTube on July 15, but the film was left unfinished following Basso’s death. He also hosted the short-lived talk show Júpiter Maçã Show on MTV.
After his separation of TNT, Basso began to sing on his own, under the name “Woody Apple” (as an tribute to the the musician Woody Guthrie and record label Apple Records, founded by The Beatles). It wasn’t until 1995 that his stage name was adopted by the band that he gained fame as, Jupiter Maca (with “Jupiter” as a reference of the spaceship Jupiter 2, from one of his favourite TV shows as a child, Lost in Space) and then formed the short-lived band Os Pereiras Azuiz alongside Ubirajara Guimaraes, Rogerio Campos and Luiz Wilfrido. They only released a demo disc, Orgasmo Legal, before breaking up. In 1997, he signed with the independent label Antidoto to release his debut solo full-length record, A Setima Efervescencia, featuring guest appearances from the former Os Cascavelletes groupmates Frank Jorge and Alexandre Barea as well as Graforreia Xilarmonica guitarist Marcelo Birck and a psychedelic sound with a heavy and experimental sound similar to Pink Floyd’s debut album in

The album’s sequel in 1999 Plastic Soda was released via Trama and, unlike the first album the album was entirely sung in English in order to show it, Basso signed the album as Jupiter Apple.
