Alongside her globally acclaimed therapy work, Julie Schwartz Gottman is the co-author or author of six books: Ten Lessons to Improve your Marriage, and Baby Makes Three: 10 principles for Practicing effective Couples Therapy, The Man’s Guide to Women, The Marriage Clinic Casebook and The Science of Couples and Family Therapy. She is also co-author of more than 30 peer reviewed journal articles.

Following her return from India Her clinical work included residential therapy for adolescents who suffer from schizophrenia, as well as groups and individual work with survivors of incest. She then focused on working with clients with low incomes as well as sexual assault and incest victims, veterans of combat along with cancer sufferers and their families. The year 1983 was the first time she was a part of the team in the creation and implementation of an initiative to address and stop sexual assault within the university at University of California at San Diego.

In her time in the late 1980s, she carried out research that looked at the consequences of heterosexual and lesbian mothers’ parenting of daughters now in their adult years to determine the most commonly-held judicial opinion that children of lesbian mothers must be removed from them to ensure their own wellbeing. Prior to this research the children of mothers who were lesbians had been investigated. The study did not find any significant differences in gender, sexual orientation, identity or social behavior between daughters raised by heterosexual or lesbian mothers. In the wake of her research she has also served as an expert witness for court cases involving lesbian mothers’ custody cases and has a practice that involves seeing both men and women who are of all sexual orientations.

Julie Schwartz Gottman was born in Portland, Oregon, the daughter of Marvin and Selma Schwartz. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) on Psychology from Colorado College in 1974. Following college, she obtained an M.Ed. for community Mental Health Counseling from Northeastern University Graduate School of Education in 1976. She then resided within India in India and Nepal for a period of time that included working with people who were in need in Calcutta. Following her return in her home in the U.S. in 1979, she was awarded an Master of Arts (MA) in Clinical Psychology in 1981 and Ph.D. from the California School of Professional Psychology (CSPP), San Diego in 1985.

Julie Schwartz Gottman began her professional career in college, and she was instrumental in helping set up a counseling facility for victims of rape, combat veterans, and other individuals who are in need. After the move to Boston where she worked, she assisted people who were suffering from schizophrenia or addiction in the Massachusetts General Hospital outpatient program located in the Boston “combat zone.” Between 1976 and 1978, she was employed as a psychiatrist in the University of Oregon Medical Center Psychiatric Crisis Unit in which she was able to continue treating people suffering from serious mental illnesses.

In 1996, Julie Schwartz Gottman co-founded The Gottman Institute in Seattle with John Gottman. She served as the Clinical Director from 1996-2001 and CEO from 1999-2001. She currently serves as President of the organization. She helped design and direct the “Couples Together Against Violence” research study to develop an evidence-based group therapy method for treating domestic violence. She also created and served as the Clinical Director of “Loving Couples Loving Children,” a national program for treating couples in poverty that was tested with over 3,000 couples.
