While a student, Dash created her script to make a document written by the New York Urban Coalition, named Working Models of Success.

She was the director of Working Models of Success (1976) followed by the next year, she produced Four Women (1975), an ephemeral dance film that was based on a tune from Nina Simone. It was awarded the Gold Medal for Women in Film at the year 1978 at Miami International Film Festival. While an undergraduate student at UCLA she earned the MFA from the department of Film and Television Production. She was the director of in the movie Diary of an African Nun (1977). It was screened in the Los Angeles Film Exposition, it won the Director’s Guild Award for a Student Film.

She wrote and directed the short film Illusions (34 minutes), which explores racial and sexual discrimination in Hollywood and American society. Released in 1982, it was her first to earn more widespread success and attention. Set in 1942 in the fictional National Studios, it follows a black woman executive, Mignon Duprée, who has “passed” for white to achieve her position. Also featured is Ester Jeeter, a black woman who dubs the singing voice in musicals for a white Hollywood star. They work in an industry based on creating images and alternative realities. The film explores Mignon’s dilemma, Ester’s struggle to get roles as an actress and singer rather than dub for others, and the uses of cinema in wartime: three illusions in conflict with reality.

Illusions received the 1985 Black American Cinema Society Award and the Black Filmmaker Foundation’s Jury Prize in 1989 as best film of the decade. Kevin Thomas of the LA Times described it as “a gripping critique of the power of the movies to shape perception,” while exploring the illusions created by Hollywood, as well as the illusion of racial identity. The success of this film and other shorts enabled Dash to move to feature films.

The short film she directed in 1975 Four Women is based on the ballad “Four Women” by Nina Simone. In the song there are four women depicted (all by dancing Linda Martina Young): Aunt Sarah who is an escaped slavery victim, Saffronia as a woman of mixed races, Sweet Thing, prostitute and Peaches as a symbol of black women who have overcome gender-specific and racial-based forms of oppression. Stereotypes about black women are addressed directly and the audience is asked to confront their own prejudices and prejudices.

Julie Ethel Dash (born October 22nd 1952) is an American film producer, writer, and director. Dash has earned her MFA in 1985 from UCLA Film School. UCLA Film School and is one of the students and filmmakers that emerged from an era called the L.A. Rebellion. After having written and directed a number of short films the film Daughters of the Dust became the first film of its length written by an African-American female receive a general theatrical release within the United States.

Dash began writing an idea in the year 1975. It was an inspiration for her dad’s Gullah family history and her immigrant parents of her home in the Sea Islands of Georgia. The screenplay would later be called Daughters of the Dust, that was put into production when she was granted $800,000 of financing through PBS at the end of 1988. The film, which was set in 1902, centers around three generations Gullah women from the Peazant family living on St. Helena Island off the coasts of Georgia and South Carolina. Innovative in the use of Gullah dialog and interwoven storylines in the predominantly female characters the film focuses on matriarchal and ancestral story narratives and the story of slaves who formerly arrived on the island and established an autonomous community on the island. Screenplays were written using the Gullah dialect spoken by the island settlers , with no subtitles, which creates an experience that is akin to a full immersion in the language.

From 1978 to 1980, Dash worked as member of the Classifications and Ratings Administrations for the Motion Picture Association of America. She had a special assignment screening at the Cannes International Film Festival to review a screening of short films in the Marché du Cinema.
