She was frequently moved throughout her life and lived in more than 30 countries in Asia, Africa and Europe. In 2004, following the passing of her sibling Davida, Buhring left the group. She returned in 2006 and returned with her two sisters Kristina as well as Celeste Jones. Together, they wrote a novel detailing the inner workings of the society that they were raised in. Not Without My Sister became a bestseller throughout Australia, the UK, Ireland and Australia. Along with her sisters, Buhring established Rise International, which later joined together with Safe Passage Foundation, helping children raised in religious sects , or in marginalized and extremist groups. The second book she wrote, This Road I Ride chronicles her travels all over the world on bicycle.

After completing the world cycling Buhring was looking for an opportunity to take on a new task. 2013 was the year she took part in the first Transcontinental Race, founded by fellow world-class cyclist and record holder Mike Hall. It is known as the most challenging race without support across Europe the race’s inaugural edition began in London and finished in Istanbul by crossing the cols that are high in the Alps. Buhring was the sole female who finished the race in 12 days and the 9th spot.

A feature-length documentary, called Inspired to Ride was made about the 2014 TransAm Bicycle Race. In addition to several interviews during the race with Buhring, the documentary included a section where Buhring was interviewed and filmed riding in Naples, Italy.

In June 2014, Buhring raced the inaugural Trans Am Bike Race. Starting in Astoria, Oregon, and finishing in Yorktown, Virginia, the race is 4,400 miles (7,100 km) long, with a total of around 51,000 metres (167,000 ft) of climbing. As in the Transcontinental Race, cyclists must ride unsupported and be self-sufficient. This race included some of the world’s top endurance riders, including Mike Hall, winner of the Tour Divide and former world record-holder as the fastest man to circumnavigate the globe. Buhring finished the race in 20 days, coming first in the women’s category and tying for 4th place overall. The part of her ride included an unbroken ride of 36 hours covering 500 miles (800 km) in her final sprint. Her performance attracted the attention of various magazines, and she was rated by the now defunct Women’s Cycling Magazine as one of the strongest female endurance cyclists in the world.

Looking for a method to raise funds and increase awareness to raise funds and awareness for Safe Passage Foundation, Buhring chose to travel the globe by bicycle. In the midst of eighteen months preparation she set off from Naples on the 23rd of July without support and sponsorship and with a small amount of funds. The funds she had were exhausted when she was she was in New Zealand, and Buhring’s large number of followers on Twitter started a steady stream of donations that allowed her to continue her journey across the globe. After the 152-day journey (144 on the bike), Buhring returned to Naples and a large crowd of people accompanied her to her the finish line in Piazza Plebiscito. Buhring travelled through 19 nations and four continents, covering 29,000 km (18,000 miles) in total, as well as setting the record-breaking first for a woman to traveling around the globe on bicycle as recorded in the Guinness Book of Records.
