Baggini is born in the year 1968, in Folkestone as the son of an Italian immigrant father and an English mother. He was raised in Kent and attended Folkestone’s Harvey Grammar School, Folkestone from 1980 to 1987. He then was a student at Reading University and gained a BA in philosophy in the year 1990.
In 2009 Baggini was philosopher-in-residence at Wellington College, a public school in Berkshire. In 2012 he was also commissioned by the National Trust to be the philosopher-in-residence for the White Cliffs of Dover where he was required to reflect on the chalk cliffs and their significance to the national identity.
In 2019 Baggini was named academic director of the Royal Institute of Philosophy.
In 1997, Baggini co-founded the Philosophers’ Journal with Jeremy Stangroom. In 1999, he was the founding member of Humanist Philosophers’ Association, that was then an affiliate of British Humanists Association. Additionally, he is a patron for Humanists UK.

Julian Baggini (born 1968) is a British journalist, philosopher and author of more than 20 books on philosophy written for a broad readership. He co-founded The Philosophers’ Magazine , and has written for a variety of international magazines and newspapers. Alongside writing on philosophy, the author has published books on atheism, secularism, and the nature of the national identity. He is supporter of Humanists UK.
In 1996, he received an honorary PhD at University College London for a dissertation on the concept of personal identity.
His 2018 book, How The World Thinks: A Global History Of Philosophy received a warm critical reception, with The Scotsman describing it as “ingenious and open-hearted” and the Financial Times a “bold, fascinating book”.
