Jude Kelly is one of the most popular and richest Theatre Director who was born on March 24, 1954 in Liverpool, England, United Kingdom. “Judith” (“Jude”) Pamela Kelly CBE (born 24 March 1954) is a British producer and director of theatre. She is the director for the WOW Foundation, which organises the annual Women of the World Festival which was founded in the year 2010 by Kelly. From 2006 to 2018 , she was the artistic director at Southbank Centre. Kelly quit her position as director of the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2002 to create Metal Culture, providing artistic lab spaces at Liverpool, Peterborough and Southend and is supported with the help of Arts Council England and local authorities. Metal is a place that allows for creative ideas and hunches can be explored; it fosters cross-art collaborations as well as projects to impact the environment, the people communities, and philosophical concepts.

In 2006 she became Artistic Director of the Southbank Centre in central London, Britain’s largest cultural institution. Kelly’s decision to step down as Artistic Director after 12 years, in order to devote herself to WOW, was announced in January 2018.

In 2010 she founded the Women of the World Festival (WOW), first held in the Southbank Centre, which celebrates the achievements of women and girls as well as looking at the obstacles they face, and which is now an annual international event.

In addition to her numerous successes as an director her performance of the musical Singin’ in the rain was transferred into the Royal National Theatre as one of the National’s touring productions. Jude Kelly was born in Liverpool and her love for theater dates back to her early days in Liverpool and she would perform plays in her backyard along with the children of her neighbors: “I’ve always had a passion for telling a story,” she’s said. When she was at Quarry Bank Comprehensive School, she was instructed by John Lennon’s former director, William Pobjoy, who inspired his pupils to think outside the box. Determined to be director, she decided to pursue a degree in the art of drama with Birmingham University, one of the few single honours-level courses offered that time. Kelly earned a Bachelor of Arts in the field of Drama and Theatre Arts from Birmingham in 1975.

She was the director in charge of the West Yorkshire Playhouse from 1990 until 2002, and as the Artistic Director and later CEO , she established it as an acknowledged center for excellence. As the Artistic Director she served on the National Advisory Committee for Culture, Creativity and Education (NACCCE) that was led by Ken Robinson, that in 1999 drafted The All Our Futures report, which resulted in significant funding from the government for youth’s cultural and creative education.

In 2006, Kelly was named number 8 in “Theatreland’s top 100 players” by The Independent newspaper.
