Rourke made her film debut with Working Title’s Mary Queen of Scots. The film stars Saoirse Ronan as Mary, Queen of Scots and Margot Robbie as Elizabeth I. The filmed premiered 15 November 2018 at the AFI Fest and was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Costume Design and Best Makeup and Hairstyling.
In 2019 Josie became a Vice-President of The London Library.
The year 2008 was the time that Rourke became the Artistic Director at The Bush Theatre The Bush Theatre is one of the most important theatres for new plays and playwrights. While working in The Bush, she programmed the first play and early work of other writers, James Graham, Nancy Harris, Lucy Kirkwood, Nick Payne, Penelope Skinner, Jack Thorne, Steve Waters, Anthony Weigh and Tom Wells. Soon after her appointment, The Bush Theatre was the focus of a proposed reduction in funding from Arts Council England. Josie submitted an Freedom of Information Act request which revealed that the cut was based on incorrect evidence and information. The Arts Council reinstated the theatre’s funds, but provided Josie three years she could find an alternative location the theatre. The Bush Theatre. The year 2011 was the first time The Bush Theatre opened in a new location within a library which was awarded the The Bush Theatre the award for Best Theatre of the Year. The new home of The Bush opened with Sixty-Six Books which was a 24 hour performance with 66 authors and 144 actors. Josie co-directed along with twelve of her fellow actors. The show was later scheduled to be staged over the course of the night in Westminster Abbey.

Josie Rourke (born 3 September 1976) is a English theatre director and film director. In 2012 Rourke is the director artistic of the Donmar Warehouse theatre in London.
After graduating in Cambridge at the end of 1998, she was employed by Cambridge Arts Theatre, co-ordinating the BT National Connections project around East Anglia. After that, she relocated to London and worked as a night- shift secretary at a mergers and acquisitions bank. She was involved in theatrical projects in the daytime as well as working with Laurie Sansom on a production of J.B. Priestley’s Dangerous Corner at Watford Palace Theatre. In the following nine months, working and living in London she was promoted to as Resident Assistant Director of The Donmar Warehouse. Sam Mendes was then the Artistic Director. In her year-long training she worked with Michael Grandage on Peter Nichols’ Passion Play and Merrily We Roll Along. Nicholas Hytner on Orpheus Descending with Helen Mirren, Sam Mendes on Nick Whitby’s To The Green Fields Beyond and Phyllida Lloyd in David Mamet’s Boston Marriage, starring Zoe Wanamaker.
Since 2012, Rourke has been a Non-Executive Director of public service broadcaster Channel 4.
