7 May 2012 Tomlin was able to pitch a decision-free game pitching an all-time high of eight strikeouts in an 8-0 win over his fellow White Sox. The next day, Tomlin felt discomfort in his wrist and had to be placed on the fifteen- day disabled roster following an MRI that revealed inflammation of soft tissue. In July, he had five-five records and 5.45 ERA and recording at least six innings in only seven of his 13 appearances (compared to 23 out of 26 across the entire 2011 season), Tomlin stated, “Last year, they could count on me to save the bullpen. It’s bothered me that I’ve been like that. It’s frustrating.” On the 21st of August in 2012 Tomlin went through Tommy John surgery. He was then eliminated from the remainder of 2012 and was scheduled to miss the whole 2013 season. But, he pitched during a game in September 12 when the pitcher pitched two shutout games against The Chicago White Sox in a relief appearance.

Tomlin was called up from AAA Columbus on May 5, 2014, and placed on the Cleveland Indians starting rotation, replacing Carlos Carrasco. The only player to reach base was Kyle Seager, getting a lead off single in the fifth. Tomlin went on to get a complete game shutout, leading the Indians to a 5-0 victory. He finished the 2014 season appearing in 25 games, 16 of them starts, with a record of 6-9 in 104 innings.

Tomlin received a promotion to the Indians in time to play his debut in the major leagues in the game against New York Yankees on July 27, 2010. There, Tomlin beat Yankees’ CC Sabathia.
