He was chosen to be a Public Affairs Officer and was enrolled in at the Defense Information School (DINFOS) in 1991. He was chosen as a participant in an opportunity to participate in the Marine Enlisted Commissioning Education Program (MECEP) and attended the University of Texas at Austin where he was awarded an honorary degree with a double major in Ancient History and Classic Civilization in 1999. Rushing was a Mustang following his graduation from UT and relocated into Quantico, Virginia, to complete his military officer education through The Basic School (TBS). Although he was slated to become the Marine Corps aviator at TBS however, hearing loss kept Rushing from attending flight school. Instead, he was relegated in Public Affairs and reported to Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, California. Rushing relocated in 2002 to Los Angeles in 2002 where he was the representative of his Marine Corps in Hollywood in the Marine Corps Motion Picture and Television Liaison Office.

Conscient of the possibility of military operations that could be conducted in and around the Middle East, Rushing volunteered to be a part of forward units prior to an invasion in Iraq during 2003. Rushing had been placed under the command of United States Central Command (CENTCOM) in Doha, Qatar, during Operation Iraqi Freedom where he was the spokesperson for the General Tommy Franks. He was unaware that an unofficial film called Control Room, captured his efforts to relay the American message through Al Jazeera Arabic. Control Room premiered in the Sundance Film Festival in 2004 and was released theatrically across the globe. Following the Pentagon directed him not to discuss the film, he resigned from his position in the Marine Corps after 14 years of active duty. He left the Marine Corps in October of 2004 and then was instrumental in the creation of Al Jazeera English in 2005.
