He was the unsuccessful Republican challenger to Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown in the 2012 U.S. Senate election. In 2016, he announced his intention to challenge Brown again in 2018; he withdrew on January 5, 2018, citing family health reasons.

Mandel’s experience as an elected official began as a Lyndhurst, Ohio city councilman, where he was elected in 2003. He served three years on the council’s finance committee.
