Joseph Victor Gonzales was born in the city of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 22 June 1960. He began his elementary schooling at the La Salle Primary School and secondary education at the La Salle Secondary School in Petaling Jaya, Malaysia.
He has been a part of and performed his work in choreographic festival that took place in Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Japan, Belgium, Indonesia, China, Japan, India, Korea, Hong Kong, Australia and New Zealand. In 1993, he was a part in the opening ceremony of the XIX International Festival of Independent Cinema in Brussels and, in 1998, his 16th Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur. He was a part of Malaysia during the Philadelphia Dance Festival (2000) and gave his papers on research at a variety of international conferences around the world.
Since 1999, his choreography presentations have begun to reflect more deeply the issues he is passionate about – giving voice to the disenfranchised and marginalized, as well as addressing the social and political challenges that are deeply embedded in society. In 2011, he established a professional dance company ASK Dance Company that presents work in Malaysia and at international festivals. In 1986 He was awarded a degree from in 1986 from the Mathematical Department of the Faculty of Natural Sciences University of Malaya. He was trained in dance and choreographic training through Davis Ballet School in Sussex (1987-1990), the Davis Ballet School in Sussex (1987-1990) as well as The London Studio Center (1991) while completing an accreditation program with the Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance accreditation (1992) in England. The year 2006 was the time he finished his master’s degree through Middlesex University. In 2010, he was defending his doctoral dissertation at the University of Malaya.

Joseph Victor Gonzales (born June 22nd, 1960 in Kuala Lumpur) is a Malaysian choreographer, professionally known professionally as Joseph Gonzales. Presently, he is an acknowledged specialist on the dance choreography, and its interpretation from Malaysia and has been a prominent figure in the theatre as well as in the field of dance education (he released a variety of important manuals and books). He is widely recognized as one of the top voice in Asia and, more specifically, Southeast Asia.
He began dancing as a child, from 1981 to 1984, he danced in the choreographic group “Kesuma” of the University of Malaya and also at the Frances Ballet Academy, and from 1984 to 1986 in 1984-1986 at the Federal Academy of Ballet. From 1992 to 1994, he was a full-time ballet tap, jazz and ballet instructor in the Federal Academy of Ballet. At the time he also served as Assistant Artistic Director for Lee Lee Lan for the Kuala Lumpur Dance Theatre. From 1994, he worked as an instructor for the National Academy of Arts, Culture and Heritage (ASWARA previously called the National Arts Academy), and was appointed Dean of their Faculty of Dance in 1998. He was in the position until 2015. He was President of MyDance Alliance (1999-2001), Co-Chairman of the Asian Dance Committee, Seoul, South Korea (2011-2017) as adjudicator for Singapore Youth Festival since 2008, adjudicator for Singapore Youth Festival since 2008 as well as Sprouts is a young choreographers’ forum in Singapore and Vice-President South East Asia World Dance Alliance (2011-2016).
