Joseph Vas is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on January 18, 1955 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, United States. Joseph Vas (born January 18 1955) is an American Democratic Party politician, who served in the New Jersey General Assembly from 2004 to 2010. In that time, he was a member of the 19th Legislative District. He didn’t seek an election to the Assembly in 2009. He was also Mayor in Perth Amboy, New Jersey between 1990 and the year 2008. He was defeated for a fifth term by the local vice- president of the bank Wilda Diaz back in 2008 with 58% – 42 percentage margin. Vas became the Perth Amboy Democratic Chairman in 2008, succeeding long-time election Chairman Ray Geneske. Vas quit as party’s chairman in 2009. He was found guilty of corruption charges against the state in 2010, and federal corruption charges in the year 2011.

In the end of October 2008 Vas as well as his whole administration as a whole were being investigated by both federal and state law enforcement agencies.

For nearly two decades, Joe Vas was a major political powerhouse and boss in Perth Amboy and Middlesex County politics. His 2008 upset defeat followed by corruption charges sent a shockwave in New Jersey politics as a one time political boss and powerbroker had fallen.

On May 21, 2009, Vas, Ramos, and others were again indicted by a state grand jury, this time on nineteen counts including official misconduct and conspiracy.

As of 2006 Vas was a candidate for U.S. House of Representatives in the hope of filling district of New Jersey’s 13th Congress seat that Bob Menendez vacated to become a U.S. Senator. However, he lost to Albio Sires on June 6 in the 2006 primary by 70 percent to 30 percent. Despite the difficult battle, Vas won 77% of the votes within Middlesex County and captured several district voting rights that include Jersey City, Newark and Bayonne. Then, Vas was crushed nearly 8-1 by the voters of North Hudson, Sires’ base of operations. Sires’ allies Silverio the Vegas, Brian Stack and Nick Sacco produced huge turnouts in their respective cities that include West New York, Union City and North Bergen. Sires is a party leader as well as support for his party in Hudson, Essex and Union Counties. Sires beat Vas within Essex County, 63% to 37 percent and in Union County 66% to 34 percent and in Bayonne 57 43% to 57. within Jersey City 64% to 36 percent. Vas defeated Sires at Middlesex County, 77% to 23 77% to 23. But, Sires crushed Vas in North Hudson, winning most towns with 80 percent of the votes and making Vas’s Middlesex result for Vas irrelevant. Sires has the backing during the primaries of Bayonne Mayor Joe Doria, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy, Newark political boss Steve Adubato, Carteret Mayor Dan Reiman and Senator Ray Lesniak, Assemblyman and Democratic State Chairman Joe Cryan, Governor Jon Corzine and Senator Bob Menendez, Senator Frank Lautenberg, Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts and former Governor Jim Florio. Vas was supported by Middlesex County Sheriff Joe Spicuzo and assemblyman Tony Chiappone, Senator Sandra Cunningham, Jersey City Councilman Steven Fulop and Woodbridge Mayor Frank Pelzman.

Vas Was one of the two Hispanic candidates who competed against the incumbent George Otlowski in the 1988 mayoral election. Vas being second in the race and losing by 325 votes. Vas was mayor for the city of Perth Amboy, New Jersey starting in 1990 when he became the first Hispanic elected as the mayor of the city. He was repeatedly elected however he was defeated in 2008 . He was reelected both in 2005 and 2007, when he was chairman of the Assembly’s powerful committee. He also was a member of the Assembly Budget Committee. Vas did not run for an election in 2009.

In May 2008, Vas received just 39% of the vote in the mayoral election, despite outspending his opponent, Wilda Diaz, by nearly 5 to 1.
