Tanner’s 3rd mission took place STS-97 aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour (November 30 until December 11 the 11th of December, 2000) The sixth Space Shuttle mission dedicated to the building of the International Space Station. When the space station was docked the crew set up the very first of U.S. solar arrays, and also delivered materials and other equipment for the first resident crew. Tanner did three space walks that lasted 19 hours and 20 minutes. The duration of the mission was 10 days 19 hours, 57 minutes. Tanner completed 4.47 millions miles (7,190,000 km).
Tanner joined the University of Colorado Boulder’s Aerospace Engineering Science Department as a senior instructor in September 2008. He assists with senior project course and master’s project course. He is also a self-employed aerospace systems consultant.
Tanner flew aboard the Space Shuttle Atlantis on the STS-66, November 3–14, 1994, performing the Atmospheric Laboratory for Applications and Science-3 (ATLAS-3) mission. ATLAS-3 was the third in a series of flights to study the Earth’s atmosphere composition and solar effects at several points during the Sun’s 11-year cycle. The mission also carried the CRISTA-SPAS satellite that was deployed to study the chemical composition of the middle atmosphere and retrieved later in the mission. Tanner logged 262 hours and 34 minutes in space and 175 orbits of the Earth.
Tanner completed two space walks while a part of the STS-82 team to help maintain the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in February 1997. The STS-82 team of seven members embarked on Space Shuttle Discovery on February 11 and then returned for an overnight landing in the Kennedy Space Center on February 21. In the course of the mission, the crew took five space walks to increase the capabilities of science of the telescope, as well as replacing old support equipment, and making HST back to near-perfect operating state. The crew also increased the orbit of HST by eight nautical miles (15 km) before release to explore the Universe. Tanner’s two spacewalks lasted 14 hours and 0 minutes. The mission orbited earth 150 times, covering 4.1 million miles (6,600,000 km) in nine days 23 hours 37 minutes.

Joseph Richard “Joe” Tanner (born on January 21st 1950) is an American instructor at the University of Colorado Boulder, mechanical engineer, former naval officer and aviator and an ex- NASA astronaut. The place he was born was Danville, Illinois. He is unique in the field of astronauts because the man did not have a prior experience in flying tests, or earn any higher academic degrees. Tanner’s journey toward becoming an astronaut was the path of operational military flying, and later to NASA for jet-based operational training before being accepted to join NASA’s NASA Astronaut Corps in 1992 after a failed application in 1987.
After graduating in 1973 from University of Illinois in 1973 as engineer Tanner became a part of in the U.S. Navy. He earned the Naval Aviator wings in 1975 prior to his assignment in the A-7E class of pilots for Light Attack Squadron 94 (VFA-94) on the USS Coral Sea. He ended his active service in the role of an instructor for advanced jets in Training Squadron 4 (VT-4) in Pensacola, Florida.
Tanner’s fourth mission, STS-115 aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis launched on September 9, 2006. On September 13, he participated in the 5 hour 26 min space walk to connect the P3/4 truss to the ISS. STS-115 returned to Earth on September 21, 2006. A photo that he took during his space walk was later listed on Popular Science’s photo gallery of the best astronaut selfies.
